ENDY 5033 ANTH 4903 and GEOG 410X

Last modified: Jan 27, 2000

Welcome to the Advanced Vector GIS (aka Geomatics) Class web page. The syllabus for the course can be located here (Class syllabus)

The course is designed as an advanced introduction (mixed message - right) to the concepts and principles that underlie modern vector based geographic information systems. The class focuses on basic principles in topology, computational geometry, database management and information technologies. There is also an applied lab (using ESRI's new product - Arc 8 and the Oracle 8i Spatial cartridge). The content of the course presume that the studnet has succesfully completed the Vector GIS class  GEOG/ANTH 4543 (or its equivalent).

The primary text is Robert Laurini and Derek Thompson Fundamentals of Spatial Information Systems.

The second key text is the Oracle Corporations documentation for their Oracle 8.x and particularly the Spatial Cartridge. It is on-line at
http://kes.cast.uark.edu/oracledocs/

Selected portions of other texts will be required - these are noted on the syllabus.

One set of readings is the TIGER 1997 documentation in PDF format. Access it on the CAST web site or at www.census.gov

Exercises
There will be a number of exercises due. These focus on the use of ArcInfo 8. The due dates for the exercises are listed in the syllabus. The tasks for the exercises are provided on the Exercise page.

NOTE: there are many good guides for the design and structure of web pages - one highly recommended source is the Yale C/AIM Web Styler Guide

Interesting Materials
Here I will place some interesting links ...

The first deals with the purchase of MapQuest by AOL and the implications for "GIS"..

On line quizzes
Anyone accessing these pages may access the on-line quizzes. The first part of the the quizzes are automatically generated from a library of questions and answers prepared by yours truly as well as by prior students in the class. The questions are processed a software package created here at CAST by Mannish Dawdkawer. The quiz is output to your browser and you answer using the mouse. The quiz is graded and the grade and incorrect answers returned to you on line. The second part of the quizzes have been created using the WebCT software. They will be accessible HERE.

Quizzes
Quiz sections will be placed here for the various parts of L&T. The quiz maker will generate a quiz for you.

PowerPoint Slides
The Power Point slides that accompany the various lectures are also available at this web site. Because we do not want to have the material widely accessible at this time only local browsers that have MicroSoft's Power Point or Powerpoint viewer plug-in browser can view the slides (sorry).  All you need to do is to scroll down this page and click on the appropriate lecture data.  They are also linked to the syllabus.
